This is a Class for Students Passionate about Learning!
CREATIVE COMMUNICATION
CREATIVE COMMUNICATION
Unleash your creativity in a language and visual art infused curriculum. When bold images combine with
insightful text, the result is a brilliant aesthetic and cognitive marriage of development that asks students to
listen, study (context, history, language, etc), feel, interpret, and collaboratively produce in multiple forms of
communication. This new interdisciplinary approach to synthesize skills, experiences, and context took over
the walls of Deerfield High School in a response and integration of the famous Humans of New York, Street
Artist Activist JR and StoryCorps. Develop fundamental writing, storytelling, visual literacy, and art process
skills, while expanding your knowledge of modern media tools for interpretation, creativity and collaboration.
Gain new, or build on existing skills to tell powerful visual stories by developing language, design and aesthetic
knowledge. We are entering a new age, that is animated by different forms of thinking and approaches to life,
that prizes creativity, involving the capacity to detect patterns and opportunities, to create artistic and emotional
beauty, craft satisfying narratives, and combine seemingly unrelated ideas into something new. In Creative
Communication, students will collaborate to create works of communication that impact the world around them
in positive ways!

Structure
This is was envisioned as a full year course taught by 2 teachers, requires an enrollment of at least 35 students
to run, and a max of 50. It was actualized as a semester course with 16 students on the first day with 1 teacher
giving up a free period to assist with the class. Not ideal but worth the sacrifice to get it running.

The structure of this course is one of interdisciplinary, cross-curricular integration between the English and
Visual Arts Department. The context is that of collaboration, and the crystallizing moments that derive from
two modes of thinking intersecting to create enhanced learning communities.

This is envisioned for grades 10-12. This class would be an interest to students who struggle in a traditional
educational setting, and students with prior experiences in both subjects, eager to dig deeper into the modalities
of thinking and processing of those subjects.

Credit received for this class will be half English elective and half Fine Arts elective. Ideally, this could fulfill a
STEAM credit in a future new-form of Dist 113 requirements, or in the least become part of a thread that
includes classes like the new Incubator Applied Art class.
